How To Wash Jeans To Keep Them Looking Better For Longer

YOUR ULTIMATE DENIM CARE GUIDE

Taking proper care of your denim will help keep your denim items looking good for longer while doing right for the planet (and your wallet!), by reducing the number of times you wash your items.
In this guide, you will find useful instructions on how to hand-wash or machine-wash your jeans and other denim that apply to all denim types. Nevertheless, always consult the garment care label before washing or drying your denim. Read below to find out more.

DENIM CARE IN FOUR SIMPLE STEPS

STEP 1: WASH LESS

How often should you wash jeans?

Washing your denim too frequently can impact its fit, colour and lifespan. Usually, all your jeans need is to air out between wearings. Also, if you spot a stain, you can use a stain remover spray or try removing it with a damp cloth, instead of washing it.

We recommend washing your jeans or other denim items after 5-10 wears. However, the frequency of washing your jeans and denim items will depend on many factors, such as, how frequently you wear them, where you wear them, and in which weather conditions.

STEP 2: WASH WITH COLD WATER

Whether you’re hand washing your jeans or using the washing machine, use cold water. The cold water helps retain the colour and shape you love so much from your jeans.

STEP 3: USE A FABRIC SPRAY

Most times, all your denim item needs is a quick refresh. To keep your jeans fresh on the daily and keep those fibres protected, it's great to invest in a fabric spray, such as The Lab Co.’s Denim Fabric Mist. Its non-toxic formula eliminates bad odours without the need for harsh chemicals. Plus, it also helps to protect the fabric fibres of your clothing all in just a few quick sprays, meaning you can walk out the door in a matter of minutes looking and smelling fresh.

STEP 4: AIR DRY

Air drying is the best way to garner maximum results when washing your jeans. Tumble drying exposes your jeans to direct heat which will speed up the deterioration of denim fibres, as this can shrink, fade, or discolour denim material.

HOW TO WASH JEANS AND OTHER DENIM

HOW TO MACHINE WASH JEANS

When it gets to the time when you need to wash your jeans, there are some variables that can cause the dye in the jeans to fade, including washing, drying, regular wear and the amass of dirt and oil. A gentle machine wash will cleanse your jeans of oils and dirt, just follow these simple steps:

STEP 1: Turn your jeans inside out and close all zippers. Doing this will protect the exterior fibres of your jeans and will prevent friction and fading from direct exposure to detergent

STEP 2: Put your jeans and other denim items inside the washing machine. Try not to overload the machine as the items won't clean thoroughly.

STEP 3: Use a specialist laundry detergent, such as The Lab Co. Denim Laundry Detergent. It has been specifically formulated for preserving denim. Simply add 20-40ml (2-4 capfuls) to the washing machine drawer and watch the magic happen.

STEP 4: Set the washing machine correctly. A delicate/gentle cycle, at a cold temperature, will help prevent the dye from fading and the fabric from shrinking or losing its shape.

STEP 5: Air dry your jeans. Remove your jeans from the machine while they’re slightly damp and hang them up, stretching out the seams. Once they’re bone dry, you can wear them straight away or fold them to be stored.

HOW TO HAND WASH JEANS

Giving your jeans a hand wash might seem time-consuming, but the results are worth it and will actually increase the longevity of your jeans (who doesn’t want that?).

So, if you’re breaking in a pair of brand new and raw denim jeans or wishing to wash your old but trusty favourite pair of jeans, follow these simple steps to find out how to hand wash jeans:

STEP 1: Turn your jeans inside out and close all zippers. Don’t forget to empty the pockets too.

STEP 2: Fill a bowl or basin with water. Fill with plenty of cool water. If you're using a sink, make sure it’s well-cleaned before washing.

STEP 3: Use a specialist laundry detergent, if you wish to preserve and lengthen the life of your jeans. The Lab Co. Denim Laundry Detergent has been specifically formulated for use on denim. Just add 10-20ml (1-2 capfuls) to the water and mix.

STEP 4: Submerge your jeans into the water and give them a good clean with your hands, rubbing all areas and paying extra attention to heavily soiled parts. Let them soak in the water then rinse the jeans until the water runs clear, squeezing out any excess water (don’t wring them!)

STEP 5: Air dry your jeans. Once you’ve squeezed out the excess water, let your jeans air dry outside for faster results (if it’s not raining), alternatively, let them drip dry in your shower or hang from a clotheshorse.
